Geog Vic May Event: registration now open

It has been a wonderfully busy month for Geography Victoria.

Our first webinar, held on 10 April as part of the international celebration of geography – GeoNight 2026 – was a great success.  It was a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with our other state geographical societies in South Australia and Queensland, and we sincerely thank them for their support and participation. 

A special thank you goes to Associate Professor Sarah Hamylton for her inspiring presentation based on her research and her recently published Plotting the Oceans: Stories of Powerful Maps and their Makers. We also extend our appreciation to our facilitator, Rob Gell AM (Geography Victoria Patron) and our guest speakers Giselle Pickering (RGSQ) and Rod Shearing OAM (RGSSA). 

With 67 guests joining us live, it was a wonderful shared celebration of geography across Australia and beyond.

Our annual Melbourne walking tour with retired city of Melbourne architect and urban planner Rob Adams AM followed on the Sunday, and as always, it was immensely popular. Rob’s depth of knowledge, urban insight and engaging storytelling makes every one of his walks a memorable experience.

Join Geography Victoria for a warm and inspiring winter evening of stories, geography, and sustainable travel.

Enjoy a hearty bowl of soup, test your skills with some light-hearted GeoGuessing, and settle in for a remarkable travel presentation from Robyn and Graeme as they retrace their unforgettable six-month rail journey from Southeast Asia through Tibet and Central Asia and Europe.

• 7:00 – 8:00 pm – Robyn and Graeme present highlights from their 2025 rail journey, followed by Q&A
• 8:00 – 8:30 pm – Share stories, ideas, and tips for sustainable travel adventures.

 
About our guest presenters: Robyn and Graeme

Inspired by Around the World in 80 Trains by Monisha Rajesh, Robyn and Graeme set off on an ambitious six-month overland journey from Southeast Asia to Europe and around, guided by a passion for slow and sustainable travel.

Travelling primarily by rail, they covered well over 20,000 kilometres by train, following an extraordinary route through Southeast Asia, China, Tibet, the fascinating “Stans”, Turkey and Europe. Their adventure also included navigating more than 30 urban metro systems, adding another dimension to the logistical and geographical richness of the journey.

This is far more than a travel talk. It is a fascinating exploration of how landscapes, cultures, and human connections reveal themselves when we move more slowly through the world. From vibrant Asian cities to the immense open spaces of Central Asia, Robyn and Graeme’s journey offers practical insights and inspiration for anyone interested in sustainable travel and geographical discovery.
